Dr Marjorie Bonello is the Head of Department of Occupational Therapy within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta. She is a registered Occupational Therapist. She obtained her M.Sc. in Occupational Therapy (Education in Practice) from the University of East London (1996) and in 2016 she was awarded her doctorate in Interprofessional Education (IPE) from the University of Brighton. Her main interests focus on interprofessional education theory, policy and practice, education in practice across the health professions, small state research and qualitative methodologies. She is also interested in the potential impact of national culture on innovation in health professional education especially in European small states and other nations.
Dr Bonello has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Malta since 1995 and became a resident academic in 2010. In addition to her headship duties, she is involved in various lecturing and supervisory commitments both within and outside her department. She also collaborates on a number of research initiatives and projects with other faculties. Dr Bonello is a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences Board and on the Faculty Research Ethics Committee. She also chairs the Board of Studies and the Board of Examiners for the Occupational Therapy programmes.
Prior to academia, Dr Bonello worked as an Occupational Therapist in a range of settings for a number of years during which she was instrumental in developing Occupational Therapy services for upper extremity rehabilitation. Dr Bonello has also worked in health policy within the Ministry of Health (1998-2010) and was responsible for various initiatives such as service audits, operational reviews, coordination of national policies, EU programme management, gender mainstreaming in health and dementia services development in Malta. During the tenure of this role, Dr Bonello sat on several National boards and committees and represented Malta at a number of international symposia.
Dr Bonello is registered with the Council for Professions Complementary to Medicine and her area of practice is upper extremity rehabilitation.
