Welcome to the Department of Occupational Therapy

We are very proud to form part of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta together with the foremost health care professions in Malta. We look forward to meet new or prospective students who are interested in the occupational therapy profession.

A career in occupational therapy offers you the opportunity to work in a fast-growing health care profession providing services in all areas of health care in the Maltese islands. Occupational therapists’ principal responsibility is to enhance individuals’ ability to participate in everyday activities, referred to occupations, after having experienced limitations because of illness, injury, limitations in skills and environmental barriers.  Occupational therapists work in hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, traumatology, public and private schools, residential care and the community.

The Bachelor degree in occupational therapy is a wide-spanning Honours programme which brings together knowledge from the biomedical and humanistic sciences, activity analysis, rehabilitation and basic research skills. Academic staff within the Department of Occupational Therapy is approachable and committed to provide high-quality teaching and support to their students. A variety of settings provide students with a range of experiences including traditional class-based teaching, lab-based practical work, clinical and community placements and the possibility of student exchange with overseas universities.   

Throughout the four-year programme students acquire knowledge and skills that not only foster professional preparation, but also bring about personal growth.

Choosing the profession of occupational therapy affords you the opportunity to make a change in people’s lives and this can be a source of considerable satisfaction.

Master of Science programme in Diabetes Care
The Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery will be offering a new Master of Science programme in Diabetes Care.

This Master degree will provide a clinical specialist postgraduate opportunity for practicing medical, nursing and allied health professionals in an area where continued development of practice is needed. This programme of studies will take an interdisciplinary approach, bringing students and academics of the different professional groups within the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery together, allowing interdisciplinary teaching, learning and research.
