Academic Objectives
The S.Th.B. course aims at giving a sound philosophical background to the study of theology and a clear, coherent and comprehensive grasp of the basic themes of theology.

Admission Requirements
To apply for admission to the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology, you must satisfy the conditions for admission as a regular student in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University.

Course Duration
The course of studies leading to the degree of S.Th.B. extends over a period of five years of full time study.

Areas of Study
The Course shall cover the following basic theological disciplines and shall be so structured as to lead progressively to a fuller understanding of the main theological themes and the inter-relationship between them.
 

  • Sacred scripture
  • Patrology
  • Church history (including palaeochristian archaeology)
  • Fundamental and dogmatic theology (including ecumenism)
  • Moral and spiritual theology
  • Pastoral theology
  • Liturgy and canon law

    During the first three years of the Course the different fields of philosophy along with relevant areas of sociology, psychology, communication studies, Hebrew, Biblical Greek, and Latin, shall be taught as required for the proper study of theology.

    The programme of theological studies proper shall start in the first year  with a general introduction to the foundations of theology, a historical overview of Christian thought and practice and a basic reflection on the mystery of salvation that can serve as a background to and a focal point for the whole of theology; it shall proceed in the second and third years in close relation to the study of philosophy and it shall be completed through further theological studies in the fourth and fifth years.

    Course of Studies
    To complete the programme of studies , students shall be required to obtain a total of 150 credits, of which

    a. During the first three years:
    36 credits must be in Theology and Religious Studies; and
    54 credits must be in Philosophy and related areas of study, of which 4 credits shall be awarded for a pass in the synoptic examination in Philosophy.

    b. During the fourth and fifth year
    60 credits must be in further studies in all basic theological disciplines, of which 6 credits shall be awarded for a pass in the synoptic examination in Theology.



    BACHELOR OF ARTS (Honours) IN THEOLOGY AND HUMAN STUDIES

    The Course Structure of B.A. (Hons.) Theology & Human Studies

    Academic Objectives
    The course aims at utilising a wide range of study possibilities for the benefit of a variety of students. In principle the combination of Theology with any area of study which the Faculties of Arts, Economics, Management and Accountancy, Education and Laws are providing is not excluded.  The Board of Studies will consider each request in consultation with the Department, Institute or Faculty concerned.

    Admission Requirements to the B.A.(Hons.) Theology & Human Studies
    To apply for admission to the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Theology and Human Studies, applicants must be in possession of:

    either
    a. the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Human Studies or Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from this University and was placed in Category I or II, provided that candidates in possession of the B.A. in Religious Studies obtained prior to 1996 and placed in Category I, II or III are also eligible to register;
    or
    b. another degree from this or another University provided that such a degree includes not less than 20 credits in Theology or Religious Studies with an average Grade B;
    or
    c. studied, on a full-time basis, Philosophy and Theology for five years in a major seminary or in an institution which is of similar academic standing, and obtained an average Grade B.

    The Course Structure of B.A. (Hons.) Theology & Human Studies
    The course of studies extends over a period of either one academic year of full-time study or two academic years of part-time study. The course includes:

  • Theology                                                   10 credits
  • Mediterranean Religions                               2 credits
  • Philosophy and Phenomenology of Religion    4 credits
  • Dissertation                                                6 credits



  • BACHELOR OF ARTS (RELIGIOUS STUDIES)
    (B.A.(Rel.Stud.))

    The B.A. Course in Religious Studies is addressed to:

  • those who wish to acquire a more solid preparation for their work in the Church as teachers of religion, leaders of Catholic organizations or movements, counsellors or social workers;
  • those who are seeking to relate their faith with their own work, professional or political responsibilities;
  • those who want to understand their own Christian tradition, its relationship to other religious traditions and its relevance to the social issues of today.

    To apply for admission to the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies, you must satisfy the General Entry Requirements of the University.

    The Course Structure
    The Course is given in the evening on a part-time basis, extending over a period of five years.  It consists of 64 credits and includes:
    a.  a general introduction to the main theological and philosophical disciplines, focusing on the problem of religion and faith in the modern world and on the fundamental elements of Scripture, Dogma and Moral Theology.
    b.  a number of more advanced study- units in Philosophy and Theology.
    c.  a number of study-units in a special area.
    d.  a long essay.

    Academic Objectives
    The course leading to the Diploma in Religious Studies is indicated for those wishing to study some of the basic religious and ethical issues of the times in the context of the Christian tradition.

    Admission Requirements
    To be admitted to the course leading to the Diploma in Religious Studies you must satisfy the General Entry Requirements of the University.

    The Course Structure
    The course is offered in the evening on a part-time basis and extends over a period of two years. It consists of 24 credits taken from the study units listed in the B.A. in Religious Studies programme.
