| DESCRIPTION | Does studying the Humanities still matter today? Is there still any value in pursuing a degree in the Humanities? In this study-unit, students will be given the opportunity to develop their own arguments in relation to these questions, using classical perspectives as a starting point in the investigation. The intersection between the Humanities and various other contemporary disciplines such as politics, gender studies, artificial intelligence (AI), digitisation, media, and business will be discussed. Each session will be roughly divided into two parts. The first part will provide an exposition on the relationship of the Humanities to one of these contemporary disciplines. In the second part, students will be invited to discuss their reactions and views to the ideas presented in the first part. Sessions will also consider the personal interests of students as well as recent national and international developments related to the Humanities. The optional preparation for each session will consist of a short reading provided in advance. This study-unit is primarily intended for students pursuing a degree in the Faculty of Arts, but also for those who wish to think further about the role of Humanities in our contemporary society. Learning Objectives: • To develop arguments for the relevance of the Humanities today; • To relate the Humanities to contemporary disciplines and industries; • To reflect on the Humanities through classical perspectives; • To think of concrete contributions to society from the Humanities; • To reflect on the role of the Humanities in our personal lives. Unit Material: • Appropriate reading material and / or handouts will be provided by the tutor during sessions and / or on the respective VLE area. Assessment: • In keeping with the spirit of the Degree Plus, there will be no formal assessment associated with this study-unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester. |
