The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research is participating in the research project entitled “Young Migrant Women in Secondary Education – Promoting integration and mutual understanding through dialogue and exchange” funded by the European Commission, European Fund for the Integration of Third-country Nationals.

The  project is co-ordinated by MIGS (Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies) and includes the participation of other well-known research centres in the Mediterranean and the UK: the Centre of Research in Theories and Practices that Overcome Inequalities (CREA), University of Barcelona (Spain), the Department of Sociology- Panteion University, Athens (Greece) and the Centre for Rights, Equalities and Social Justice (CRESJ) at the Institute of Education, University of London (for further information  see MIGS website http://www.medinstgenderstudies.org).

The aim of this project is to explore intersections of  gender and ethnicity and particularly how gender and cultural identities are played out in the educational experiences of young women from third countries. The research project focuses primarily on young migrant women’s own articulations of their experiences within Maltese girls’ secondary state schools. Other research activities are aimed at enhancing the educational experiences of the migrant girls participating in this project as well as addressing the educational needs of Maltese students in understanding the challenges exprienced by their migrant classmates. The project involves the the participation of teachers, headteachers and parents/guardians of the young migrant women in a discussion seminar and  the participation of Maltese policy makers and  members of Maltese NGOs in a conference in Nicosia, Cyprus. The project started in December 2009 and ends in June 2011.
