The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DMME)

The Department was established in 1992 within the Faculty of Engineering to provide units dealing with materials for the B.Eng.(Hons) undergraduate degree.

Today the Department offers lectures in materials engineering to the:

  • Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with Materials
  • International Master of Science in Heat Treatment & Surface Engineering (MinSE)
  • Master of Science in Industrial Product Development (IPD)
  • Master of Science in Conservation Technology for Masonry Buildings

Another main activity of the DMME is research in the field of materials engineering. The department currently has four ongoing Ph.D.s and two M.Sc.s by research.

The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DMME) has among its objectives, a strong collaboration with industry. The department has invested substentially in reasearch, both national and international, in the fields of heat treatment, material characterisation, surface engineering and materials testing. Furthermore the DMME also offers various services to industry.

MinSE starts July 2010
The International Master of Science in Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (MinSE) will start in July 2010. More details can be found in the MinSE brochure, flyer and website
