The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DMME)

The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DMME) was established in 1992 within the Faculty of Engineering to provide academic and research capability in materials engineering.

The Department staff deliver study units ranging from the fundamentals of materials science to nanomaterials and biomaterials at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and academic research at postgraduate level is supported.

Our research areas include material degradation, surface engineering, laser processing and composites, and we are actively collaborating with industry and research institutions in these fields.

Our laboratories also support research carried out by other faculties and local industry by providing expertise in the behaviour, properties, degradation, testing and characterization of materials, and the application of material engineering techniques to optimise the selection of materials and material processing techniques for obtaining the best performance out of materials.
