The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DMME) has 5 Ph.D. and 4 M.Sc. research students. Some of these students are funded by the STEPS  scholarship scheme.

Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of Malta is offering students opportunities to conduct research projects at both Ph.D. and M.Sc. levels.

As a Department we provide a dynamic environment combining traditional academic excellence with an innovative attitude, and we are organised to respond to new themes and initiate multidisciplinary research. 

Since the DMME has partnerships with leading international universities, Ph.D. and M.Sc. researchers cooperate with researchers from all over the world.

The Department has four topical research teams:

• Laser Materials Processing

• Surface Engineering

• Materials for Heritage Conservation & Archaeology

The Department also conducts research in the following areas:

• Material Selection

• Composite Materials

• Tribology

• Corrosion

• Material Characterisation
