| DESCRIPTION | It is now accepted that radiography as a profession is developing and changing radically. Increasingly, radiographers are taking on greater responsibilities, and in particular, there has been a demand for radiographers to perform intravenous (IV) injections. There are innumerable benefits to radiographers keen to advance professionally. Role developments such as IV injecting will greatly enhance personal fulfilment, job satisfaction and prestige, which can in turn lead to increased motivation and career enhancement. However, with greater contribution to healthcare provision as well as increased knowledge and personal development there comes an increased professional responsibility and legal liability to achieve and maintain acceptable standards of clinical care. Issues that must be addressed in relation to radiographer-performed IV injections include: appropriate training and assessment of competence; departmental protocols; allocation of responsibility; cost effectiveness; and performance monitoring. All are developed within a framework of audit and research. The study-unit addresses the concept of role development in this field to meet the needs of radiographers who will be involved in the administration of prescribed medicinals This study-unit will create a liaison between the theoretical and the practical components of radiography. This study-unit will also accelerate the development of skills in radiography and facilitate the application of these skills to actual problems and situations confronting radiographers. This study unit is covered by learning experiences through the use of lectures, workshops and group-work appropriate to adult learning. Course Aims: 1. To provide the appropriate theoretical background for radiographers to establish venous access and undertake intravenous injections. 2. To allow radiographers to develop clinical expertise in intravenous injection procedures. Course Objectives: On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the role of the radiographer in the administration of intravenous injections; 2. Demonstrate the professional and medico-legal implications of this role; 3. Draw up criteria under which radiographers may undertake intravenous injections; 4. Demonstrate the ability to assess risk groups and profile the patient for suitability for intravenous injection by the radiographer; 5. Negotiate and implement departmental protocols for the administration of intravenous injections by radiographers; 6. Demonstrate understanding of the pharmacological and physiological principles of preparations administered in diagnostic imaging; 7. Explain and undertake the procedure for venous access and intravenous substance administration; 8. Explain and implement the safety precautions associated with intravenous injections; 9. Recognise and deal appropriately with any adverse reaction to intravenous administration; 10. Evaluate and assess the procedure of administering intravenous injections.
