Post of IT Officer I or IT Officer II
IT Services
Applications are invited for the post of IT Officer I or IT Officer II within the University IT Services. The post holders will be expected to provide Audio Visual (AV) IT support in Learning Spaces
The post may involve providing other IT support services as indicated in the ‘Further Information’ section.
IT Services manages the IT infrastructure of the University and offers a range of facilities and services to assist a community of over 20,000 staff and students with their IT-related needs.
Eligibility
Post of IT Officer I
Applicants should have:
- a relevant diploma qualification (MQF 4).
OR
- 2 years’ relevant work experience.
Post of IT Officer II
Applicants should have:
- a relevant advanced/higher diploma qualification (MQF 5);
OR
- 3 years’ relevant work experience.
Skills and Competencies
Audio Visual (AV) IT support in Learning Spaces
Support experience
- Technologies used in learning spaces such as display screens (projectors, LED displays etc) audio systems (microphones, audio mixers, speakers etc) interactive boards/screens, computer-based video recording systems (lecture capture of audio, video and content) videoconferencing and audio-visual control systems;
- Experience in installation, use and support of computer operating systems such as MS Windows and macOS;
Technical & Infrastructure Standards
- Networked Audio: Understanding and de-mystifying the protocols shaping the institutional audio landscape, such as Dante.
- IP Media Delivery & Security: Managing content when delivering video, and digital signage over IT networks.
- Assistive Listening: Implementing assistive listening solutions utilising Wi-Fi networks, Auracast, induction loop etc. to meet audience accessibility requirements.
Space Design & Collaboration
- Wireless Collaboration: Navigating the current and future landscape of wireless content sharing in learning environments.
- Building Management Systems (BMS): Utilising managed enterprise solutions to drive room efficiency metrics, reporting, and improving campus sustainability credentials.
- Cross-Department Alignment: Bridging the gap between AV, traditional IT, Networks, academic and building teams under the shared initiative that all these teams are structurally on the same side.
- Holistic Learning Environments: Designing learning and collaboration spaces centered around accessibility standards and tracking student perspectives on modern classroom technology.
General Skills and Competencies
Applicants should possess the following:
- Ability to communicate successfully with all levels of users;
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal (in English);
- Ability to work both on own initiative and in a team, and be able to adapt to different work environments;
- Ability to prioritise and schedule work;
- Experience in installation, use and support of end-user applications such as MS Office, Google Workspace, Adobe software, Web browsers, antivirus software, personal firewall and end-user security issues and data backup practices;
- Disposition to learn new skills on the job and to pursue further studies/professional training as may be required.
The following would be considered an asset:
- ITIL Foundation certificate, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals certificate, AppleCare Hardware certificate etc.
- AV certifications (e.g. AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist);
- Programming/scripting skills;
- Experience on documentation systems
- Experience on ticketing systems
The IT Officer I/II may be required to work on an ‘on-call’ basis should the need arise.
Salary Details
IT Officer I: The annual salary for 2026 is €24,716 rising by annual increments of €400 up to a maximum of €27,516. On completion of four years of service in this grade, the appointee will on satisfactory performance be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €440 up to a maximum of €29,373. After a further period of two years, the appointee will on satisfactory performance be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €450 up to a maximum of €31,381.
IT Officer II: The annual salary for 2026 is €29,994 rising by annual increments of €500 up to a maximum of €33,494.
Candidates will be entitled to an annual bonus related to performance from 0% to 5% of basic salary.

Further Information
IT Services manages the IT infrastructure of the University and offers a range of facilities and services to assist a community of over 20,000 staff and students with their IT-related needs. IT Services also provides administrative and technical support to the .mt domain registry and manages the Maltese National Research & Education Network (NREN) providing access to the GÉANT network to local research and education institutions.
The role of IT Services staff is to proactively support both generic and specific IT requirements for teaching and research in academic departments and/or IT business needs of support and administrative departments. They proactively liaise with end-users, IT Services staff and other stakeholders in terms of supporting these requirements and to deliver improved effectiveness and efficiency through the use of IT across the University.
IT Services staff may be required to operate from the main University campus or other University sites, as may be required by the University.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Main duties and responsibilities may include:
Audio Visual (AV) IT support in Learning Spaces
- Service and support of IT and audiovisual facilities including computer training rooms, computers in research laboratories, open access workstations, printers, scanners, wireless network access, videoconferencing and learning technologies in learning spaces (e.g. interactive boards and lecture capture equipment). Additionally, the post holder is required to assist with the setting up and upkeep of such learning spaces;
- Assist in the setup and operation of audiovisual installations including live events.
General duties
Applicants may also:
- Investigate and resolve software/hardware problems in consultation with other IT Services staff as appropriate;
- Act as point of contact with end-users and departments being serviced, be proactive to disseminate information to users and in turn collect feedback from users for improvement of IT services;
- Assist with purchasing of hardware and software, including liaison with suppliers;
- Undertake routine preventive measures and assist in threat and vulnerability assessments, followed by appropriate remedial action, to ensure optimal IT systems security;
- Record and manage all faults, queries and incidents on issue-tracking software;
- Assist with the implementation of environmentally friendly IT policies;
- Assist with end-user documentation of IT systems and services;
- Assist other IT Services staff taking over their responsibilities as may be necessary;
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade, as required by senior IT Services staff and respective head of service team to which the post holder is attached.
The appointee is expected to work:
- on a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council; and
- at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
The Selection Process
The selection procedure will involve:
- The evaluation of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by
- testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
- certified translations of any non-English documents into English;
- official documentation showing the qualifications’ EQF/MQF level or MQRIC equivalency certificate (https://mfhea.mt/).
- Short-listing of candidates.
- An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Administrative, Technical and Industrial Staff” (https://www.um.edu.mt/hr/services/recruitment).
In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:
- Relevant academic qualifications;
- Relevant work experience;
- Aptitude and suitability; and
- Performance in interview.
The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of one year and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
