The Department of Communications and Computer Engineering has been in existence for more than ten years, since 1995. Until 2007 it formed part of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta. During this time it was responsible for the undergraduate students following course modules in CCE. The Department also participated in the evening M.Sc. course providing a considerable number of modules for the degree. Since 1996 the Department has participated in the B.Sc. I.T. (Hons) course run by the Board of Studies for Information Technology.
Since the setting up of the Faculty of ICT in 2007, the Department has kept its commitments to the B.Eng.(Hons.) and the B.Sc. I.T.(Hons.) degrees. A new 3-year degree in Communications and Computer Engineering started in October 2007. The Department also participates in other 3-year degree programmes run by the Faculty of ICT and the Faculty of Engineering.
CCE also offers postgraduate research degrees both at the Masters and Doctoral levels in the areas of communications and computer engineering. From October 2010 the Department is planning to start a taught full-time M.Sc. in Communication Systems.
The Department has been involved over the past years in various EU funded research projects. At present it is involved in two EU funded projects, and one RTDI funded project.
Current research activities of the department are in digital signal processing, compact antenna design, wireless communications and information systems.
At present there are nine full-time academic staff members, of whom one is on sabbatical, one studying, and one on long-term leave at a university abroad. There are also three part-time members. There are also a number of full-time researchers.
