When it was set up in 1987, the primary aims of the Institute were to provide undergraduate courses in Health Care Sciences and allied areas; to certify that other courses provided by other Institutions were of a standard acceptable to it; and to conduct research of both mono-disciplinary and a multi-disciplinary kind, with a focus on health care. Besides the undergraduate courses, the Institute is now also offering Postgraduate Diploma and Masters level courses. The Institute also offers post-registration and continuing professional development courses in an endeavour to keep registered staff abreast of advances made in the medical field.
Team Approach The philosophy of the Institute is to produce health care professionals of a high academic and professional standard who can intermingle with ease with the other professionals of the health care team, as befits the modern and future health care profession.
Staff Development, Research & International Links An integral part of any institution is the developing of a research arena for staff and students alike. Promoting the professional development of staff has become a key factor at the Institute, with a number of staff having a doctorate degree and others embarking on Ph.D. programmes, besides actively participating in local and international conferences. This in turn has lead to the establishing of closer links with foreign universities – both European and internationally. The forging of these links has been facilitated primarily because the Institute of Health Care has adopted the unit-credit system thus allowing for the active participation in E.U. programmes such as Erasmus and Leonardo.
