TITLE Project in Sustainable Energy

DESCRIPTION Students will be assigned a research topic in energy, sustainable energy, renewable energy or a related topic. Students will conduct research work that may include building up and testing of systems, comparative or simulation studies as well as environmental and economic evaluations linked to the project. Each student will be assigned to a supervisor from the Institute's Members of Academic Staff, who would provide guidance on initial reading and data sources, comment on draft reports, and provide support and feedback at all stages of the work. A co-supervisor may also be appointed from within the Institute or another department or faculty at the University of Malta, as may be required.

Study-unit Aims:

• To enable the student to put into practice the theoretical knowledge that was acquired throughout one's degree course;
• To focus on a specific topic in greater detail;
• To provide an opportunity for the student to plan, manage and implement an individual research and development project in energy technology;
• To prepare a dissertation and defend it in an oral session;
• Where possible and feasible, to encourage students to publish scientific papers based on their area of research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To enable the student to put into practice the theoretical knowledge that was acquired throughout the course years;
- Acquire a deeper knowledge on a specific energy process or system;
- Learn to carry out independent research in a structured and well-planned manner.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Attain a sufficient degree of independence and creativity in conducting research;
- Be able to defend research work using a scientific approach;
- Acquire experience in solving problems arising from research activities.

Books, Scientific Publications, software and other academic or technical aides and tools, relevant to the topic of research.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite qualifications: Acceptable Proficiency in English Language

**September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
