Resilience Index

The Institute is involved in a major research initiative in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat for economic resilience building of small states. As a result of this initiative the Institute in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat published four books [PDF]. Sustainability Indicators

The Institute was involved in a major project relating to the development of sustainability indicators for Malta. More information is available at the SIMO website.

Climate Change

The Institute is involved in a number of research initiatives on Climate change. Professor Lino Briguglio has been involved in climate change research at an international level for at least ten years. He is the only  Maltese academic involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change  (IPCC). Through his involvement in Working Group II of the IPCC, he is a lead author for the chapter on Small Island Developing States in the  Third, Fourth and Fifth assessment Reports. He was part of the team that was awarded the Nobel prize to the IPCC in 2007, and was presented with a certificate in this regard. Dr Eman Calleja is a research fellow recently  engaged by the Institute that has specialised in climate change impacts through his PhD studies. He is now studying the impacts of Climate Change on European Islands. He is also part of the Management Committee for the EU-COST research project EURO-AGRIWAT: Assessment of EUROpean AGRIculture WATer use and trade under climate change. The Institute is also part of the Climate Change Platform within the University of Malta.

Research by Students

Students following the M.A. (ISSS) course are expected to write a dissertation on an approved topic.
