The Library houses an important range of literary manuscripts, historical papers, and archival records of the University of Malta since 1800, as well as a collection of rare books.
Amongst the manuscript collection the more important items held include papers of the 19th century educationalist Paolo Pullicino, the Bonavita collection, and papers by Maltese literary figures such as the National Poet Dun Karm Psaila, Laurent Ropa, Guze' Aquilina, Francis Ebejer, Giovanni Curmi, Ninu Cremona, and Rosar Briffa.
The University's archival records present a wealth of information of a biographical, socio-political and educational value.
Catalogue cards for the manuscripts and rare books purchased prior to May 1992 are filed in separate drawers in the Melitensia card catalogue. Information about material acquired after May 1992 can be retrieved from the OPAC.
