Mission Statement of the M.D. Course

M.D. COURSE OF STUDIES

GENERAL MISSION STATEMENT

Medical doctors graduating from the University of Malta will be competent professionals who are safe to work in a supervised clinical setting. They will be patient-centred, yet maintain a population needs and system improvement perspective, and communicate well with honesty, compassion and respect. They will be able to make safe, timely and ethical decisions, strive for excellence and work effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment. They will be self-directed, reflective, life-long learners with the ability to critically appraise, adapt to and apply evidence, know their own limitations and be accountable for their actions.

SPECIFIC MISSION STATEMENT

‘Each department or speciality will provide a course of studies of sufficient depth in the field so as to give the eventual graduate a base of knowledge and skills for further learning in whatever speciality the graduate will opt to work in during his/her career.  The aim of the study-units is NOT to make specialists in any particular field but to ensure that the graduate has a suitable knowledge foundation to ensure the potential for critical reflection and provide life-long learning skills.’

The course of studies assumes that the medical student is an adult-learner and will seek out to attain the targeted learning objectives to make him/her a safe professional. Adult-learners do not restrict themselves to subject learning, but should strive to learn to be better able to perform a task or solve a problem that allows them to perform more effectively. It should be very much self-directed.

As agreed by Faculty Board on 24 August 2021.
