TITLE Remote Sensing

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Communications and Computer Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the basic principles of remote sensing and the applications of signal processing and machine learning in this field. It covers a range of sensing techniques supported by modern Earth Observation satellites, including SAR, optical and infrared. The study-unit also provides an overview of several techniques used to process, analyze and visualize remote sensing imagery, and-unit delves into a number of remote sensing applications in which machine learning, image processing and computer vision techniques are increasingly being used.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to give the student the tools and knowledge necessary to process and analyze remote sensing data using image processing and machine learning techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the basic physical principles of remote sensing;
- Describe the general procedure of remote sensing;
- Identify different types of remote sensing data, sensors and platforms;
- Identify different types of remote sensing applications.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyze and process SAR data (amplitude and phase);
- Analyze and process optical and near-infrared imagery (production of RGB images, commonly used indices);
- Apply image processing techniques to correct remote sensing data;
- Apply machine learning techniques for various remote sensing applications.
