| DESCRIPTION | Choosing a research methodology that is philosophically and methodologically aligned with the aims of a study is a key consideration in qualitative doctoral research. This workshop introduces the philosophical foundations of Narrative Inquiry as a qualitative methodology and the methodological principles of Narrative Analysis as an approach to the analysis of narratives and meaning-making. Narrative Inquiry is particularly relevant to researchers in the social sciences, education, health and related disciplines, where understanding experience, identity and the socio-cultural contexts of human action is central to scholarly inquiry. Adopting a comprehensive approach, the workshop examines the epistemological and theoretical underpinnings of narrative research, research design considerations, participant selection, narrative data collection methods and the principles and procedures of Narrative Analysis. Particular attention is given to reflexivity, rigour, ethics and interpretation, enabling participants to develop a critical understanding of the methodological and interpretive decisions involved in producing credible, rigorous and theoretically informed narrative research. LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Explain the philosophical foundations of Narrative Inquiry as a qualitative research methodology; 2. Distinguish between Narrative Inquiry and Narrative Analysis; 3. Evaluate the suitability of Narrative Inquiry for their own research; 4. Describe the key stages of designing a narrative research study, including participant selection, data collection and Narrative Analysis; 5. Critically discuss the roles of reflexivity, rigour, ethics and interpretation in narrative research. |
