| Abstract: | The topic for the present dissertation is to sociologically investigate sexism in the music industry in Malta. The study aims to investigate three main areas. They are: • The objectification of women in the music industry • Their treatment in the music industry • Their empowerment in the music industry In this qualitative research, several variables were identified that indicated the occurrence of sexism in the Maltese music industry. As a means of gathering data, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, with females who are involved in the music industry of Malta. The participants were either singers, managers, vocal coaches or songwriters. This dissertation shows how sexism is experienced by the female artists. Even though it is found that female artists are treated differently than their male counterparts and are objectified both by people in the industry and by people in the public, yet it was also discovered that both sexes are still given the same opportunities to enhance their musical career. It was also discovered that although the authority offers plenty of educational opportunities, yet the music industry itself was not found to be as empowering as the artists would wish. |
