Narcotráfico y libertad de prensa en Colombia a finales del s. XX

Abstract

During the span of fifteen years, Colombia witnessed the rise of one of the most powerful men on the continent, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. A man who bought off those who agreed with him, and murdered those who didn’t. Nevertheless, the drug trafficker´s threats did not work because most of the journalists were willing to do whatever it takes to expose him and educate the Colombian population about the true activities of The Boss. Therefore, this work aims to analyse the freedom (or lack thereof) of the press at the end of the 20th century in Colombia. The first chapter is a summary of the history and geography in Colombia, also mentioning the facts which have affected Colombian history in one way or another. The second deals with the phenomenon of drug trafficking in Colombia, with references to the impacts of narcotics in three spheres: the economy, the environment and the society. The third chapter introduces the character of Pablo Escobar, from his birth to his death. The most important moments of his life will be mentioned, and the reasons why he decided to violently attack the press in Colombia. The fourth, and last chapter deals with the press in Colombia, emphasizing the threats and murders of the drug trafficker against the journalists.
