Leading in a time of crisis : leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic in Catholic primary schools in Malta and Ireland : a comparative study

Abstract

This dissertation investigates leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic in Catholic primary schools in Malta and Ireland. The study aims to understand how school leaders navigated the crisis and compare leaders' responses in the two countries. The research employs a qualitative approach, gathering data through semi-structured interviews with six school leaders, three from each country. The findings are analysed thematically, identifying themes that emerged from the data. These themes include school dynamics in a crisis, quality teaching and learning, the use of technology, leading during a crisis, leadership and well-being, and lessons learned from the experience. The research highlights the importance of reflection, communication, and investment in the well-being of all stakeholders to enhance school practices. By reflecting on their experiences during the pandemic, leaders can identify essential practices that should become more prevalent in everyday school life. This dissertation contributes to the understanding of crisis leadership in Catholic schools.
