Imaging of endometriosis

Abstract

Endometriosis is a common chronic gynaecological condition, characterised by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, which can cause pelvic pain and infertility. The aetiology of endometriosis is not fully understood, but genetic, hormonal and immunological factors are thought to play a role. Endometriosis is thought to affect approximately 10% of women in their reproductive years.1 It is found in 20- 50% of women suffering from infertility and in a majority of women who suffer from chronic pelvic pain. There is an increased risk for endometriosis if a first-degree relative/s suffers from the condition.
