Identifying whether Generations X & Millennials are aware of dark heritage sites during their visit and if they know this niche exists

Abstract

Background: Despite Dark Tourism being around for a long time, it is still a relatively unfamiliar concept in the tourism sector. Most tourists are unaware of the existence of this niche, even when they visit sites of dark heritage. For centuries, people have been fascinated by the macabre, so much so that tourists from around the world have travelled to such places to gain insight into locations that have seen great suffering and death. This study will look at two particular demographics, Generation X and Millennials, in order to gain more understanding of this topic in relation to these age groups. Methodology: A quantitative approach was adopted for this study, with bespoke questions presented by means of an online questionnaire. This questionnaire was distributed via social media platforms such as Facebook groups and Instagram between January and March 2023 and data was collected during this time. Results: One hundred and fifty-two (152) questionnaires were gathered. Results indicated that there is a divide in the results gathered. For instance, the majority of the respondents did not know what the term ‘Dark tourism’ meant as they have never heard of this term. Conclusion: This study confirms the need for increased information regarding this particular theme of ‘Dark Tourism’, as the results garnered from this study demonstrates that many of the participants lack the necessary understanding.
