Facilitating God’s revelation through meaning-making : applying a narrative hermeneutical approach to religious education

Abstract

In a 2019 document, the Secretariat for Catechesis of the Maltese Archdiocese emphasises the fact that human beings are spiritual by their very nature, and seek transcendence, and that through Catholic Religious Education (CRE) such a need for transcendence can be satisfied. Moreover, it explains the potential of CRE to provide students with opportunities to explore their religious and socio-cultural roots in various ways, while simultaneously being formed in their identity and educated holistically through the nourishment of the mind, heart, and soul. These three aspects of the human being correspond to the cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions of human personality, and are also considered to be the three main domains where learning takes place, and that education should address for it to be holistic.
