Abstract: This qualitative research study further looks into the spending patterns of pensioners in Malta while also paying close attention to their quality and standard of living, now that their monthly income has drastically changed upon retirement. This research aims to analyse whether Maltese pensioners find their pensions sufficient in continuing to lead the same lifestyle as if they are still in employment. One of the main aims is to analyse if their spending patterns and their quality of life have changed now that they are no longer employed, and whether the pension has financially and socially affected their lifestyle. To better understand the life and spending patterns of pensioners, a qualitative research method was used to gather data from eight participants. Furthermore, two professionals in the field were also interviewed in order to provide critical insight on the matter. In order to provide indepth understanding of the pensioners’ perceptions and experiences, semi-structured interviews were carried out, using the snowball sampling method. For the purpose of this dissertation only third agers were chosen. Despite the fact that the profile of all participants differed, almost all participants shared similar experiences and perceptions, regardless of gender, social status and marital status. The purpose of this study is to shed light on the quality of life of pensioners. While keeping in mind that this study is not representative of the Maltese population, it certainly provides a detailed glance on the quality of life and the spending patterns of pensioners residing in a local context. Moreover, this study provides an impetus for further research into the sociological situation in Malta.
