Midwives' knowledge of radiation effects on the conceptus

Abstract

Objectives of the Study The dissertation focused on the midwives' knowledge of radiation effects on the conceptus, as they are the main point of reference for the mothers and mothers to be. No previous studies on such topic have been performed in Malta. Methodology Research was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to all the midwives working at the local general hospital, asking them on their knowledge on x-rays together with assessing the type of information forwarded to the pregnant patient. Results The findings indicate that there are a considerable number of midwives who were not in possession of the right information on x-rays and their use within a Medical Imaging Department. Furthermore, there is also an evident lack of knowledge regarding the type of x-ray effects on the conceptus at different stages during gestation. The data revealed that x-rays and their effects are not mentioned in the information supplied to the pregnant patients. Conclusion The study suggested methods and approaches to improve this lack of knowledge in x-ray radiation amongst the midwives. These methods will help educate the female patients, consequently leading to a better informed consent. The setup of a basic introductory course regarding x-rays and their effects on the conceptus within the midwifery undergraduate curriculum, together with the supply of leaflets to the female general public, were the main suggestions proposed to reach this aim.
