Abstract: All of us feel a sense of wonder as we watch the very young, and reminescences of the pangs and pleasures of our own young days tend to fill our minds. Growing up is a full-time job, and whether it be in a cramped urban environment or on a tiny island, it is not as easy as it looks. Neither does it seem to have become any easier as the world grows older and more complex. Yet the promises are better than before, as our glance at the Gozitan child a hundred and fifty years ago and today amply shows. [excerpt]
