Abstract: Mdina is the only Cathedral city in Malta. Every Archbishop of Malta is officially enthroned at Mdina after his nomination by the Supreme Pontiff and takes possession of his Cathedral Church. The enthronement is the effective start of the new archbishop's pastoral care of his faithful and of his administration of the Apostolic See of Malta. It is known that most probably Malta's first Cathedral was dedicated to Almighty God and to the Blessed Virgin on her Assumption to Heaven, popularly known as Santa Marija. Today's Cathedral is however dedicated to the Conversion of St Paul, apostle and father of the Maltese, having been God's instrument in preaching to the Maltese Nation Christ's message so early in the history of. the Church in A.D. 60. It can be considered as an Apostolic Cathedral Church since the Maltese Church owes its foundation to Apostolic times. [excerpt]
