Abstract: Throughout the centuries the streets of Valletta have witnessed visits by many illustrious personages, be they royalty, painters, novelists and poets. Among the famous poets of English literature to visit our Mediterranean island was Lord Byron. George Gordon Byron was born in London in 1788. He was the son of Captain John of the Guards and Catherine of Gight in Aberdeenshire, an heiress whose fortune her husband squandered. When his grand-uncle died in 1798 Byron succeeded to the title and estates, thereby becoming the sixth Lord Byron. [excerpt]
