The awareness and preventive techniques employed by corporate networks in dealing with cyber intrusion

Abstract

In today's world, businesses are operating in a high risk environment. With the existent technology and the rapid development in information technology, business assets are more prone than ever to computer crimes. Although a business can be attacked from the physical aspect, nowadays wrong doers are also targeting the 'virtual' facet of a corporation. The perpetrator may perceive that it's easier to arrive to the companies' assets through its networks rather than using the "traditional" material method. If there isn't enough awareness and an adequate employment of security measures, the wrong doer might find the network intrusion rather simple/easy. Gaining unauthorized access to a network constitutes a crime and is often referred to as cyber intrusion. It could cause irreparable damage for a company to have its data in unauthorized hands. Therefore as businesses invest finances and effort in physical security it's in the same way critical to emphasize importance on the technical aspect of the company. In order to guarantee that the appropriate security measures are taken note of and implemented it is necessary for a business to be aware of the risks posed by a network intrusion. This dissertation will study the awareness of the Maltese business community by consulting professionals from the information technology business and exploring the possible security measures that can be adopted .to prevent cyber intrusion in a corporate network.
