Abstract: Organic and inorganic fertilisers have been used in the agricultural sector for a number of years. The result of their excessive use raised questions on their effects on both humans and the environment. The ever increasing demand for higher agricultural production has intensified the use of fertilisers and with it, public awareness and environmental pressures. The European Union strives to enhance the quality of living within its member states and has therefore created a directive to safeguard and protect water bodies from agricultural nutrient inflows, thus reducing pollution risks and creating a more sustainable environment. Through research and enquiries this study was carried out to observe the current uses of farmyard manure as a source of Nitrogen fertiliser, while identifying the aims and requirements of the Nitrates Directive and recognising its degree of implementation.
