Abstract: This investigation, in general, seeks to analyze the question whether it is true that literature evolves and modifies with time. More accurately, it studies the language used in the creations of the Romantic period, in opposition to the language used by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, a post-Romantic poet, in his Rimas. However, in this investigation three themes were considered to be the most commonly applied by such authors, and these arguments were: frustrated love, disillusion and death, topics used as a reaction against the objective and emotion-lacking literature of the Neoclassicism. Very briefly, love is the main focus of both Romanticism and Post-romanticism, yet, being so seemingly impossible for two lovers, due to problems like difference of social class, it is hard for them to develop a serene affinity. This produces awareness of their disillusion and, at a later stage, these lovers evolve a growing aspiration towards death, perceived as the only resting solution. This, which is very common amongst the Romantics and Bécquer, is what will be studied in this investigation, presenting certain differences.
