12:15 - Issues of Maltese Bibliographical Control: Challenges and Ways Ahead
Speaker: Prof William Zammit - Faculty of Media & Knowledge Sciences (MAKS), University of Malta
13:15 - Q & A session/informal discussion
The presentation will focus on the current situation where the permanent retention and recording of Malta-related published material is concerned, then moving on to possibilities for improvement in that respect. Both the traditional paper-based material but also the digital one present challenges, particularly given the quite extensive output of material in both formats, coupled with limited resources. Historical, but also material of current research value risks being lost unless a national digital infrastructure is created to retain such published material, also through the development of a national collection development and retention policy.
Prof William Zammit is an associate professor and former Head of the Department of Library Information and Archive Sciences. His areas of research specialization and publication include Malta-related publications in their various manifestations, cartography and historic Maltese archival collections, in terms of identification and description. Together with a team of local and foreign specialists, he is currently working upon a detailed bibliographical description of early printed material datable down to 1500 (incunabula) being traced in Maltese collections.
