Connected Continents: A new epoch for Australia-EU relations

Event: Connected Continents: A new epoch for Australia-EU relations

Date: Friday 15 May 2026

Time: 10:00-11:00

Venue: Campus Hub Block O, Level 5, Room 517

The EU and Australia may be far apart geographically, but they share common values. In March 2026, Prime Minister of Australia, the Honourable Anthony Albanese MP, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the strength of the partnership between Australia and the European Union, welcoming the adoption of a new security and defence partnership, the conclusion of negotiations on a new free trade agreement, and Australia's intention to commence negotiations with a view to associating from 2027 to Horizon Europe.

Together with the High Commissioner for Australia to Malta, His Excellency Mr Matt Skelly and the Head of the European Commission Representation in Malta, Dr Maria Elena Despott, we will discuss the strong relations between Australia and the EU, and the importance of these recent agreements in addressing shared global challenges and supporting prosperity and security.

Event hosted by the Institute for European Studies and supported by the International Office.

Event registration will be open until 12 May. The registration form is available online.

Light refreshments will follow.
