DESCRIPTION The place of Latin within the Indo-European family of languages. The linguistic situation in Italy before 500 B.C. The spread of Latin till the fall of the Empire and the subsequent development of vulgar Latin to the rise of the Romance languages.

The development of the Florentine dialect as a written language and the spread of literary Tuscan in the other regions of Italy and its gradual replacement of Latin. Topics such as the debates and the solution of the Language Question, French influence and reactionary purism, and the stands taken by Manzoni and Ascoli regarding the linguistic situation in the Risorgimento era will be highlighted up to the adoption of the literary language as the national language from 1860.
