TITLE Ethics 3

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Philosophy

DESCRIPTION Ethics 3 focuses specifically on life and death issues. Life and death issues are with us all the time whether one is discussing the morality of war in general or some particular war, or subjects of more intimate concern like suicide, euthanasia, and abortion, many of which find their way into the popular press and the media through famous cases. This unit raises some of these questions and explores the ways in which moral philosophy can help us deal with them, at the same time exploring the limits of moral philosophy. What will be especially noted is the indeterminateness of contemporary moral debate especially on the really hot issues where, as MacIntyre points out, debate tends to degenerate into abusive language, personal attack, and chaos. The question here is, of course, whether things could be otherwise, whether their rational resolution is possible.
