UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Architecture and Urban Design

DESCRIPTION During this study-unit, students are offered an introduction to digital techniques for the creation of images, by means of demonstrations, hands-on application of specialist software packages for Art, Design and the Moving Image, and assignments. The course will include an introduction to vector 2D drawing, using Cartesian Space and the digital graph paper, an introduction to 3D representation (construction of 3D surfaces, meshes and textures), to digital bitmap images, and image manipulation, to the graphic design playground and desktop publishing, and to animation. Without specifically recommending particular software packages, students will be introduced to a range of commercial packages such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Google Sketchup, AutoCAD 3D, Adobe Photoshop/Corel Photopaint, Adobe Illustrator/CorelDRAW/Adobe Freehand, and Introduction to 3D Studio Max.

Study Units Aims:

The objectives of this study-unit are to:
- Introduce and apply a variety of art and design software packages;
- Familiarise students with both 2D and 3D software packages;
- Introduce the medium of digital photography as documentation and artistic practices;
- Introduce the concept of parallel creation through traditional and digital means.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Make use of a variety of software packages;
2. Create 2D drawings to represent a 3D setup such as a collection of solids, or other simple composition.
3. Create a 3D model out of the 2D drawings.
4. Create elements of a scene through digital photography or direct bitmap creations.
5. Create graphic design elements to integrate in a scene, such as a logo.
6. Incorporate the above components into a finalised rendered 3D scene where one or few objects move, and where, possibly, a viewpoint moves.
7. Apply the right techniques from concept sketch to finished digital artwork;
8. Prepare and accumulate a substantial portfolio of work, in both traditional and digital media.
