TITLE English Proficiency 2: Rhetorical Strategies in Writing and Speaking

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Centre for English Language Proficiency

DESCRIPTION The main purpose of this study-unit is to equip students with rhetorical strategies for speeches and extended writing in English. It will also consolidate and enhance students’ critical thinking and encourage them to use the language of critique. This study-unit addresses some of the difficulties students often encounter when they need to take a critical stance in their arguments as well as in their evaluation of propositions presented by others. In addition, a substantial amount of time will be spent in developing the skill to select from a range of rhetorical functions they would apply effectively in their spoken and written production. It is a final but key component of this programme as it marks the completion of the higher communicative skills necessary for academic and professional domains.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To encourage students to take ownership of their own extended writing and speeches;
- To develop students’ knowledge about the various functions of rhetorical strategies in spoken and written English;
- To develop students’ skills in selecting specific rhetorical devices in speech and extended writing;
- To immerse students in critical thinking;
- To encourage students to practise the language that allows them to critique in discipline specific contexts.
