Study-Unit Description

CODE CCE3311

TITLE Communication Systems

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Communications and Computer Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce design concepts from a systems perspective. It introduces the concepts of blocking and non-blocking communication networks, communications traffic theory, wireless propagation characteristics, special frequency reuse, and cellular systems. The study-unit will also cover GSM, GPRS, UMTS, DECT and satellite systems. Quality of service measures and network planning will be studied.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-units provides a basic understanding on how to design and plan communication systems, with a special focus on cellular and satellite communication systems. It also aims at giving a theoretical background that covers radio propagation impairments, switching, and traffic theory, and presents some models used during the design and planning of wireless systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the difference between strictly non-blocking and reconfigurable switching systems and determine the minimum number of switches required;
- Understand the concepts behind radio propagation and traffic theory, and apply some basic models;
Design and dimension a cellular network;
- Understand the power budget in a satellite system.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use Erlang tables to determine the quality of service of system;
- Apply basic propagation models to determine the received signal strength in wireless systems;
- Work the power budget requirements in a satellite system.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Main Texts:

- F.G. Stremmler, Introduction to communication systems, Addison-Wesley.
- Telecommunications Engineering, J. Dunlop and D.G. Smith.
