| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will offer students the opportunity to analyse one of the key texts of ancient philosophy and examine its relevance in the context of contemporary ethical debate. Aristotle's views on the good life, the moral and intellectual virtues, practical wisdom, friendship and the importance of philosophical reflection will be discovered. Study-unit Aims: The aim is to introduce students to the main issues raised by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics through a close reading of the text. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - define the good life, the moral and intellectual virtues, friendship and other concepts; - restate Aristotle's unique contribution to ethical theory. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate the importance of a close reading of any philosophical ext he or she might come across during the rest of the study unit; - interpret the text so as to provide a coherent account.
