DESCRIPTION This study-unit will form the presentation component of the student’s final year and will home in their oral and poster presentation skills. Students will receive training to improve their presentation and communication skills which are core skills for any scientist. This will take the form of interactive lectures where students will be taught various elements of presentation and communication skills. The study-unit will culminate in both an oral presentation and a brief poster presentation which will take place toward the end of the academic year. These will form separate events where students from other years and other academics will be invited to attend which will highlight the student research.

The core aim of this study-unit is to improve the presentation and communication skills that students will have developed through the various presentations they will have delivered throughout the previous year's study-units. This will be implemented by (i) providing interactive training in which students develop and practice their presentation skills in relation to describing academic research; (ii) developing students' ability to communicate scientific results through an oral presentation; (iii) working on students' writing skills in terms of their ability to communicate results through reports and dissertation writing styles; (iv) covering the basic tenants of Public Engagement with research, Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Dialogue.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Connect the theory behind public speaking with more practical elements which will help student's future careers;
- Communicate ideas and project outcomes through different science communication approaches;
- Consider the core ideas behind Public Engagement with research, Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Dialogue;
- Practice different modes of science communication.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Present engaging talks through the development of thorough public speaking exercises;
- Communicate the results of scientific studies and present obtained results within the context of a scientific study;
- Defend research performed through either oral or poster format presentations;
- Produce talks suitable for the general public;
- Develop presentations suitable for diverse audiences in terms of background and scientific literacy.
