DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers historical, theoretical, and practice-based knowledge to put values-driven museums into a context, and consider how such approaches can support the growing international visitor experience.

References to case studies from across the world allow to demonstrate key values and characteristics of socially engaged practice, such as an active approach to advancing inclusivity, equality, social justice, human rights, and lifelong learning.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to develop students’ understanding of the ways in which museums have been – and are - studied and analyzed by researchers and theorists across a range of disciplines, and to provide them with experience of the practical application of methods and tools in the field.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of key theories of, and approaches, to museology;
- Examine the development of museology in its historical and critical contexts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess theuse of critical tools and theoretical approaches in their own work, using a nuanced critical vocabulary;
- Evaluate the relationship between theory and practice in the contexts of their own and others’ professional experience.
