DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to enhance the professional health practitioner’s clinical decision making skills to support safe practice across various health settings and with different patient populations with diverse health issues. Using a case-based approach and a clinical decision-making framework, the students will be exploring the current knowledge required to implement best practices with respect to the assessment and care of patients with various actual or potential health challenges. This study-unit will start with a game initially to introduce decision making. This is followed by discussion forums, videos, and readings to equip the students with different strategies which will in turn empower the students to acquire knowledge and develop an understanding and ability to achieve efficient and accurate clinical decision making, which places patients and service users at the centre of care.

Study-Unit Aims:

Professionals have to take clinical decisions continuously, as part of their daily practice., involving a great deal of risk. This study-unit aims to increase the ability of the students to make autonomous judgements in light of evidence and to do so safely, effectively and collaboratively. It will allow students to formulate and justify clinical decisions, apply appropriate interventions and treatment plans within complex and dynamic clinical environments, always placing patients and service users at the centre of care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Possess a level of knowledge and understanding of the philosophy and practice of clinical decision-making by going through the three core processes of: Knowledge, cognition and metacognition; and
- Describe theories, concepts and methods that underpin patient centred clinical reasoning and decision-making processes.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically explore the decision-making processes used in specific area of practice that are underpinned by evidence, sound clinical judgment and ethical stance;
- Augment the understanding of several frameworks to support clinical decision making;
- Develop the ability to assess, plan and evaluate client-centred care based on multiple ways of knowing, principles of evidence based decisions (evidence based practice) and current best-practices; and
