DESCRIPTION This unit is designed for students of all experience levels in creative writing. New writers are especially welcome! The unit will give students the opportunity to experiment with different narrative forms, styles, and genres in a supportive environment. Each lecture will consist of short writing exercises (“sprints”) followed by a workshop format centered on the work generated by the in-class exercises. Students may also expand on their in-class work and bring in updated pieces for additional feedback over the course of the semester. Students are highly encouraged to both share their work and give thoughtful feedback to each other during the workshop section of class. The lectures are interactive and students are encouraged to actively participate.

The unit will focus mostly on narrative writing, but any kind of creative writing is welcome. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with different forms, styles, and genres, and their specific interests will be supported by the instructor.

The unit includes the following components:

- In-class writing ‘sprint’ exercises that are meant to jog creativity and get ideas flowing;
- Post-exercise class workshopping of written pieces with the other students in class;
- Brief lectures summarizing the fundamental elements of narrative writing;
- Optional at-home exercises and readings.

Learning Objectives:

- To get acquainted with the basic building blocks of creative writing, such as narrative form, character development, writing style, and structure
- To write stories or works with the guidance of in-class material
- To gain experience giving and receiving constructive feedback on written works in a workshop setting
- To analyze published works from a writer’s perspective
- To have a better insight into the work and planning necessary to create a piece of narrative writing

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the unit the students will:

- Be able to craft their own unique written works;
- Have a collection of short written works;
- Have set of exercises and handouts they can refer to when feeling creatively blocked;
- Have the tools and skills to expand a short piece of writing into something longer;
- Have a better critical understanding of the fundamentals of storytelling.

Unit Material:

- Handouts will be provided during the sessions.
- Extra readings can be supplied each week by email or print out depending on interest level.
- Students who are interested in further reading or additional exercises may ask the tutor for extra material.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, students will have the opportunity to write a longer piece of work should they choose to. Attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.
