DESCRIPTION The UM Library Work and Experience Programme is a learning opportunity for UM students to learn about academic Library services, programmes and processes as well as enhance their academic and technical knowledge through practical experience. The programme offers participants a chance to work directly in different library fields in order to gain first hand experience while assisting the Library in the day-to-day activities and/or special projects. Such a program would help the Library start, continue or finish projects in a more efficient manner while helping students develop skills, which can be transferred to any profession. The programme offers participants the opportunity to learn how academic libraries are structured, how they operate and all the backend services offered which might not be so visible to all patrons.

Opportunities and Tasks:

● Attend the library lectures about services;
● Possibility to work at various branch libraries;
● Visit different library departments;
● Stocktaking duties and/or Reclassification/Cataloging;
● Assisting Service Points;
● Outreach duties;
○ Market Research, Case studies, Social Media/Marketing Campaign planning, Brainstorming for Events/Workshops, assist librarians with video editing, contribute on library project.

Opportunities and Tasks:

● Experience the library environment from a different perspective;
● Work experience;
● Foster a sense of belonging towards the University as an Institution;
● Learning new skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

● Communication and Customer Care skills;
● Planning and Management skills;
● Ability to adapt and work in teams;
● Research skills;
● Organisational and Marketing skills;
● Hands on experience with Library procedures.

2. Unit Material:

● Appropriate study-unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutor may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.

Assessment:

● In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This study-unit may require one-off visits to different branch libraries located off campus. This unit’s timetable can be very flexible depending on the student’s availability during particular periods. Summer intake of this unit would require students to be able to attend the lectures/sessions during the summer library opening Hours (08:00-13:00).
