| DESCRIPTION | This Unit is designed for students with no previous knowledge of Dutch. It consists of basic speaking, listening, writing and reading exercises, all with a focus on everyday situations, as well as a brief introduction to Belgian and Dutch culture. The lectures are interactive and students are encouraged to actively participate. The Unit includes the following components: - Thematic chapters (e.g., introducing yourself, asking for directions, ordering food, booking appointments, shopping etc.); - Phrase sets, listening and comprehension exercises; - Basic spelling and grammar exercises; - A brief introduction to the differences between Belgium and The Netherlands in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary and culture. Learning Objectives: - To get acquainted with the basics of Dutch; - To have simple conversations; - To efficiently use the thematic phrase sets provided; - To be able to read and write short texts; - To have a better insight into the cultural and linguistic differences between Belgium and The Netherlands. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the Unit the student will: - Be able to communicate efficiently in everyday situations; - Have the skills to read and write basic texts in Dutch; - Have a better understanding of Belgian and Dutch culture. Unit Material: Handouts will be provided during the sessions. Students who are interested in further reading or additional exercises may ask the tutor for extra material. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory. Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. |
