| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is open to all students playing a Wind, Brass, Vocals, Drums, Bass, Piano & Guitar. The benefits of playing in an ensemble are both musical and social. To start with the latter, through ensemble playing students will learn how to work as a team to produce wonderful music. This will be backed up by the right approach to rehearsing and performing so that students will develop a positive group identity, a bonding with peers, and a strong sense of community. Rehearsing will eventually become for them the ideal time to take risks, make friends and feel a sense of belonging. Apart from that, playing in an ensemble will give students the chance to unwind from their academic commitments. From the musical point of view, students will learn how to improve instrumental technique through the assistance of a supporting group of professional instructors on their respective instruments. Through such coaching students will acquire the right attitude to playing in an ensemble with emphasis, amongst others, on a more sensible group playing and intonation, balancing, group coordination and proficient performing practice. The Ensemble is very active in the musical life of the University and is occasionally invited to perform abroad. Learning Objectives: - To provide an opportunity for wind and percussion players to master the techniques of playing in an ensemble; - To enhance student’s musicianship; - To expose students to a range of musical styles; - To provide students with the basic skills for a natural musical performance. 2. Unit Material: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this study-unit. However, students are expected to attend regularly for the rehearsals of the Ensemble and to participate effectively in all concerts. Students are also expected to cooperate effectively in a team for the success of any upcoming concert. |
