| DESCRIPTION | This course introduces the European Union and EU law within the context of a state’s membership of the EU and then deals with selected topics which are of direct interest to the general public about EU citizens’ rights. Selected topics include a background of EU treaties, free movement, Schengen, monetary union, Environmental protections, and consumer rights among others. Study-Unit Aims: The main objectives of this course are: - to achieve a better understanding of the European Union and how it works; - to understand the basic citizens’ rights; - to understand how one can profit from being an EU citizen. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: By promoting personal/professional development throughout this course in a safe and supportive learning environment, participants are empowered to: - discover what are European Union objectives and how it works; - be able to understand better media-related information about the EU; - be able to communicate better to others the workings of the EU and EU citizen’s rights. 2. Unit Material: - By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. Assessment: - In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory. Note: Degree-plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of many academic demands however participants would gain more if they experiment with their acquired skills between sessions. |
