CODE MGT5914

TITLE Systematic Approaches to Evidence-based Management

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Business and Enterprise Management

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is aimed at creating an understanding and first hand practice of evidence-based management and the five-step approach. It will cover areas like decision-making and logic, asking questions, searching and acquiring evidence (including methods and strategies), making critical appraisals of evidence, applying evidence and assessing / evaluating the evidence. Each of these core sub-components are meant to build both a knowledge based understanding and practice-based insights about how to look into a important tools that make up the evidence-based decision-making process. Because the study-unit will make use of case studies, it is hoped that participants can relate better with the applications of the knowledge derived in class. Tasks will also be designed to create a 'hands-on' experience that helps to bridge the learning.

In terms of content, this study unit will be covering the following topics:
• Decision-making, logic and sense-making
• Asking questions: Methodological and applied research implications of gaining evidence
• Searching and acquiring evidence: methods and strategies (including systematic reviewing, meta analysis, CATs, Action Review and PICOC)
• Critical appraisal of the evidence
• Aggregating, applying and evaluating the evidence.

Study-unit Aims:

This specific study unit has two specific aims:
1. To introduce students to the logic and models of logic underlying decision-making processes;
2. To encourage students to explore several perspectives to approaching the evidence.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. articulate various applied research designs to specific questions;
b. comprehend logical models to access and make sense of the available evidence;
c. describe the use of different approaches to making sense and evaluating evidence.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. have hands-on practice of selecting best designs for specific questions;
b. practice some approaches for evaluating evidence.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Essential text:
Rousseau, D. M. (2012). The Oxford Handbook pf Evidence-Based Management. Oxford: Oxford University Press.

Other specific material including papers and documents will be provided to students in the process and shall be posted on VLE.
