| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will seek to address the basic principles and theories of management in health and health related settings. It focuses on the significant element of management in the role of the nurse. All the salient dimensions of management will be addressed that is assessment, planning, decision making, organising, delegating, monitoring and auditing. Leadership will also be addressed in an attempt to explain its importance and the various styles and approaches will be discussed. Different organisational structures and cultures associated with management in health care settings will be presented, including the use of IT in such contexts. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study unit are to: - Educate students regarding management theory, challenges and function; - Enable students to analyse issues related to motivation and leadership in nursing; - Encourage students to examine organizational communication processes and team building; - Enable students to explore aspects related to human resources management including staffing, in a critical manner; - Teach students how to work in a team; - Enable students to understand and implement carry out quality assurance approaches, measures and strategies; and - Equip the students with knowledge and skills enabling maximal use of IT in management. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand basic theories of management and leadership; - Discuss main principles related to change; - Analyse the concepts of quality and standard setting; - Discuss different management approaches of patient care delivery; - Work in a team; - Develop, and implement quality assurance initiatives; and - Understand the use of IT in management initiatives. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply principles of management to facilitate optimal care delivery; - Apply principles that foster staff satisfaction and development; - Manage staff, resources and patients in the clinical area in a professional manner; - Use effective communication skills to manage a clinical setting; - Organise and manage the various elements and facets of patient care effectively; - Organise an effective team; - Carry out effective quality assurance initiatives; and - Use IT in management purposes.
