DESCRIPTION The study-unit will commence by discussing the basic definition of "practice development" within the range of health care settings. Following this, using current literature, students will engage in online discussions on current trends and issues that are affecting practice development across various countries. In the latter part of the study-unit, students will work on a practice development initiate in their own clinical settings.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to develop an understanding of the current trends and issues in practice development in health care settings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the necessity of practice development within a modern health care organisation,
- Critique the purpose and methodology underpinning practice development,
- Evaluate the importance of a transformational culture,
- Discuss how relationships influence the ability for practice to develop,
- Evaluate practice developments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Show, through writing, the development of insight and skills in cultural change and leadership,
- Develop and present an evaluation strategy for an organisational/unit practice development initiative,
- Experience the mechanisms necessary to establish effective active learning/group supervision groups.
